Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
