UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
