Putin Pledges Continuous Crude Oil Deliveries to India in Snub of US Demands

During a clear signal to the West, President Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “continuous” deliveries of oil to India. These remarks came when Putin and Modi met in the Indian capital and declared their relationship were “resilient to outside influence.”

A Signal Directed at the United States

This affirmation, issued after the annual summit, appeared to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, who have sought to urge New Delhi into reducing its historical relations with Moscow. The context follows previous American measures, including the introduction of import duties on India because of its buying of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy supplier of oil and gas and all required for the growth of India’s energy sector,” the Russian president stated. “Moscow stands willing to keep ensuring the consistent supply of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, without referencing crude specifically, reinforced the theme by saying that “energy security has been a key and important pillar of the bilateral alliance.”

Challenging US Interference

Prior to the talks, via a television interview, Putin had challenged Washington's stance regarding India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India claim the same privilege?”

The visit represented his initial visit to India since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and the two nations engaged in a deliberate effort to display that the bond between the heads of state remained intact.

A Personal Reception

Taking an rare gesture, Prime Minister Modi welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. They embraced warmly like longtime companions before holding a closed-door supper the night before the summit.

The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's alliance with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “based on reciprocal esteem and strong faith.”

Expanding Defence and Economic Partnerships

The bilateral summit resulted in multiple important deals in the fields of defence and economic cooperation. One significant result was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which targets to increase twofold mutual trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the target year.

Furthermore vowed to recalibrate their defence ties. While Russia remains India's biggest exporter of arms, the volume has diminished in recent years as India has sought broaden its sources.

The joint statement emphasized plans for the joint production of sophisticated military systems, although direct details of deals for the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.

Overall, both nations restated that during the “current complex, strained, and unpredictable global landscape, their relationship continue to be resilient to foreign influence.”
