The beluga known as Jelly Bean’s offspring Bertie is an cute small “playful character”. The whale Orion – nicknamed “Onion” – is a sizeable but fiercely protective companion. Another whale, Zephyr has “ants in his pants” and wiggles like a worm. Lillooet is the “biggest cuddle bug” with a kind nature.

Thirty captive marine mammals in a Canada-based entertainment facility have been caught in a disagreement between a defunct facility, public officials and advocacy groups.

But those most familiar with the whales say the intense controversy over their future often fails to consider the individual traits of the whales who, after spending their lives in enclosed habitats, have been closely studied by the people who see them each day.

After the Canadian government prevented the export of the belugas to a foreign facility, the controversial attraction near the famous falls where they are kept warned to put them down unless the government funds the cost of keeping them alive. Canada’s fisheries minister has rejected that ultimatum, placing the thirty whales in an dangerously unstable circumstance.

Highly Cognitive Sea Creatures

Scientists say that beluga whales’ brain structure, along with their vocal imitation skills, intellectual tasks and social skills point to they are highly cognitive creatures – something a former trainer learned first-hand.

Burgess spent three years as a beluga trainer, a job that entailed gaining confidence of the aquatic animals.

“Building up those connections over time takes a lot of dedication and a lot of love. At the outset, they’re very wary of you,” she said. “In time, you gain shared confidence. And they start being more open with you. It’s just so magical and gratifying.”

The trainer knew the whales were highly intelligent, but she says she was nonetheless surprised by the details and unique traits in their characters. She cultivated a deep bond for two female belugas with opposing personalities.

“One whale accepted me. Cleo required effort,” she said. “They changed the way I perceive connection.”

Public Concerns and Deteriorating Conditions

Burgess’s connection with the whales developed against a backdrop of rising activist criticism to their enclosure.

During her time at the attraction, multiple belugas and the park’s one orca, Kiska, died. In all, nineteen belugas have perished at the park since recent years, a toll which the park links to age-related causes, but which activists say points to the poor conditions in which they were housed.

The park did not admit visitors to the visitors over the recent season, but the former trainer says she witnessed firsthand consequences of the closure. “Concrete is falling apart from the enclosures because they’re in disrepair and not being repaired. The whales are exploratory and so they pick it up and swim around with pieces in their jaws. It’s upsetting to see.”

The park did not comment to a inquiry, but earlier stated: “The whales … get far better veterinary services and around the clock supervision than any person in the UK, or anywhere else.”

Uncertain Future and Potential Resolutions

Burgess was terminated from the park in the spring following the passing of a beluga, an unwell beluga the caretakers had to put down. She said the park thought information of the incident were shared to the news outlets and she was let go not long after.

The ambiguity over the whales’ outcome has left Burgess and staff members in anguish. She says the park’s ultimatum to kill its whales is a negotiation tactic and is a “logistically impossible” task, adding any efforts to put down even a one beluga would require “considerable manpower”, trucks and heavy equipment.

“It cannot happen in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

She advocates for demands for the whales to be taken promptly from the park, with its crumbling tanks and shrinking team.

In late September, the nation’s government official rejected a proposal to export the whales to an overseas location.

“To approve the proposal would have meant a perpetual situation in confinement and a return to display for amusement,” the minister wrote. “As Canadians, we know that whales are meant for the sea, not in enclosures for our amusement. I could not in ethical standing approve an export that would continue the conditions these belugas have suffered.”

But Burgess said the minister’s statements reveal a broader lack of awareness of the circumstances of existence for belugas born in captivity.

“The society needs to understand these are whales that have existed solely in confinement and they will need human care for the remainder of their lives,” she said. “Many just don’t understand that it’s not as simple as saying ‘close it down’.”

Sanctuary Proposal and Ongoing Debate

As authorities attempt to find a answer, ideas have emerged, some of which have minimal feasibility. One proposal called for the belugas to be released into the wilds of northern regions – where whales are a important part of sustenance for Inuit communities.

A proposed refuge in the region of Nova Scotia, which has received government approval, has proven contentious. The future facility, which includes 100 acres of protected cove, remains undeveloped. Proponents remain hopeful that it could in time represent a permanent answer for eight of the whales.

But, Burgess says, among staff she’s discussed with, there is “skepticism there” about what she said is “simply an trial” in the whales’ future.

Others say the possibility of a refuge reflects a changing attitudes away from captive facilities and could represent a feasible approach in the short term.
