Arne Slot Maintains He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Humiliation
Arne Slot admitted that it's natural for questions to be raised about his position following a further heavy defeat versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th loss in 12 matches, representing the club's poorest streak since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I am OK, I've received significant backing from above,” Slot remarked.
“It's important to reverse this trend and get a victory naturally but if you are coaching a team and not doing well then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He noted, “I accept my role. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it is about time that we turned it around.”
Conversations with The Board
When asked to expand on his discussions with the club's leadership, the head coach explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they don't phone me all the time each day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard conversations we have I perceive the belief. But I haven’t spoken to them since this match yet so let’s see.”
Familiar Problems and Player Reaction
The manager expressed regret over recurring shortcomings from his team in their European defeat, namely wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his assessment of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the solutions. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder stated.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond being angry inside. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He added, “It’s hard because I play for the club I love. I support them, and I’ve seen this club all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a spell of this nature with results this poor.”
Jones stated, “But we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And until it is taken away, we'll continue to compete.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all again the values of this club and why it's known as the greatest side in the planet.”
“But right now, things are bad and we have to turn it around.”
