Anthony Joshua Doubles Down on Controversial "Kill" Comments Directed at Paul

Anthony Joshua and Jake Paul face off
The YouTuber-turned-boxer is set to fight a significant challenge against former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Anthony Joshua stood by his much-discussed comments about wanting to “kill” Jake Paul during a news conference in Miami on midweek.

These statements were first made on the previous day when the boxer was asked if he would show restraint against the social media star, replying that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.

The upcoming fight against the internet personality turned fighter has drawn criticism over the risk involved and the size difference between the two fighters.

Fury Calls AJ a “Classless Loser”

Former titleholder Tyson Fury called Joshua a “classless loser” for his extreme comments.

But Joshua, justified his position: “This is my profession, we fight. We have a license that permits extreme violence.

“I understand many people don't understand it but this is what my job is. I just enjoy what I do. The outcome, happens - as long as my hand is raised, that's what's crucial, with all due respect.”

He continued, “That's just the mindset we have to have as boxers. I don't know if other fighters think that way. Maybe they're a bit more reserved. The way my mind works. When you're in the squared circle, it's a dangerous thing. Everything can happen.”

“You hope your opponent leaves the ring in good health, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed aware you just did your job. It wasn't personal.”

Jake Paul's Incendiary Response

Jake Paul, a huge outsider in the heavyweight contest as a natural lighter fighter, was equally incendiary in his reply.

“This is a contemporary gladiator sport,” he declared. “I'm ready. I want his strongest punches. I want there to be zero excuses when it's all said and done. We should kill each other.”

AJ will face his opponent, 28, at Miami's arena in a bout many consider a major mismatch, with some suggesting it should have been approved as an non-professional fight.

The official fight will be fought over 8 three-minute stanzas using regular ten-ounce gloves, with a specified maximum weight for Joshua.

Joshua Says He Was “Brought In to Rescue” The Sport

Despite the vulgar language used, the fighter suggested he has been “brought in to rescue” boxing.

“They want me to put an end to the Jake Paul phenomenon and I understand it and that's why I have to bear boxing on my back in this fight,” he added.

The event also had lighter moments, with Joshua smiling as his rival sang a nursery rhyme to him.

The final staredown passed peacefully, with Paul striking a unusual pose before the champion stayed composed and lightly grabbed Paul's necklace.

Both Fighters Deny Pre-Arranged Claims

The unusual aspect of this bout has led to rumors about its authenticity, including suggestions that he may be restricted from scoring a knockout.

“There's nothing in the contract, Joshua can confirm it. We're going to war,” Paul insisted.

Joshua, sporting a expensive necklace, humorously remarked, “The only thing in the agreement that got my attention was the purse.”

He has claimed on his platforms that the fight earnings will be exceptionally high.

Biggest Shock in Boxing History?

Jake Paul first gained fame as an digital influencer, gathering a massive online audience.

He has not faced anyone of the former champion's pedigree but maintained that his opponent would take him seriously.

“It's a wise move on his part,” Paul said. “This could possibly be, and will be, the biggest defeat of his life.”

A win for the underdog would be arguably the biggest surprise in the boxing's annals.

It would undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on Joshua's record, but the fighter stated it would not spell the end.

“I would return again, shake it off,” he remarked. “I will be main eventing again in a couple of years. It is what it is. I'm a competitor in the game.”
